But that is the deep, underlying question that inspires all religion and all philosophy, isn't it?
I do not mean to be flippant, but everything that I read seeks to answer the question "why are we here?" This is immediately followed by denying the only plausible answer (because the course of natural events led to this point in time, and all that we see), and seeking something else. I find that fascinating.
I could answer the question "why am I here" by saying "because my mother and father had sex." That's not particularly satisfying, is it? We're not looking for a simple cause and effect "reason" but a purposeful one.
And that, I think, is why we always wind up with a religious answer involving a deity. Because there cannot be a "purposeful reason" without a purposer (to paraphrase GW Bush, the decider).
