It sounds to me like you experienced synchronicity which is a "meaningful coincidence". This is where spirit meets matter. I do think there is a great possibility that what was going on within you connected to the outside and the snake sensed this energy. It probably was also sinchronitity that you were reading about the snakes and Joseph Campbell.

I think this all could signify that you are experiencing a rebirth at this time or a shift in thinking.
