Can the Bible really be used as a manual for life?

After trying to live by the Bible for a number of years, I can tell you that I found it impossible. My life at that time was reduced to flipping through Bible verses, to see what God had to say about relationships, money, career, etc.... I didn't find alot of practical guidance. I'm glad, however, that I tried. It lead to alot of inner searching.
It's hard to know what people mean when they say "I live my life according to the Bible." For some, I think it simply means "I worship Jehovah" or "I follow Jesus," while for others it may mean a specific set of morals or an even more specific theology. I doubt anyone can embrace each and every statement in the Bible and apply it to the letter, even if they claim to.

Aren’t there other books that are more current and topical that can be practical to life and living today?

For me, yes. But I remember being a little frightened to explore them at first, feeling they might be out of line with Christianity. Ironically, I'm able to understand more about the Bible now, after opening my mind to other spiritualities.

If no one ever read the Bible, could they still function and participate in life?

I'm with Tony here: the answers are inside us. I don't think mainstream Christianity gets it on this point. We're a part of God, spirit, made in His likeness. We can only recognize truth because a part of us already knows it.
Great questions, cadero!
