Asatru, Olympus and the Etruscans
I've been looking for information on the early days of Norse culture, and there are some very interesting parallels that suggest a westward and then northward migration into Scandinavia.
The missing link may be the Etruscans, a culture that was destroyed by the Romans in approximately 300 C.E. The Etruscan deities read like a Who's Who of Roman and Greek gods and demigods, with a few that may be connected to the Aesir and Vanir. Here's a quick "off the top of my head" comparison of a few: Horta (Etruscan agriculture goddess) --> Jord (Norse earth goddess) Tinia (Etruscan supreme god, with spear) --> Odin Veltha (Etruscan god of change) --> Vili Vetis (Etruscan god of death and destruction --> Ve (...Would that make Tinia, Veltha and Vetis the triad of Odin, Vili and Ve?) But the most startling item is the Etruscan language. I distinctly see members of the Elder Futhark in there, although there may not be a 1:1 correspondence between the symbol and the alphabetic value. In the webpage it indicates that there probably was trading contact between the Etruscans and the north. Not much to go on, but does it sound plausible so far? |

A good book to get is Myths and Symbols in Pagan Europe by H.R. Ellis Davidson
Shows the Parallels of Celtic pagan Europe and Norse pagan Europe. As for the Etruscans I am not so sure because they seem to be more influenced by the Greeks just like the Romans. There is evidence however connecting them to the Celts maybe. The Celts were right by ancient Northern Italy for a long time. Etruscans also seemed to have skirmish wars with the Celts alot too.
