Christians were sent to the arena for the crime of atheism. They refused to honor the local gods. We are all atheists in someone else's religious schemata and that's just the way it is.
I know some atheists who just don't accept the evidence offered thus far. They are especially scornful of the Bible-thumpers around them who just feel that they believe in anything put in front of them. If it is in the Bible, they believe it. They are profoundly ethical people in their personal and business lives and I respect them deeply. Where I get angry -- and I'm a believer in God -- is under the circumstances where people get in my face and think they have a right to know my most intimate relationship with God without knowing ME or having related to ME. I have absolutely horrified one or two of those people with a comeback that left them pale and walking backward making the sign of the cross.
