Remains of the ark found

Quote:
Christian archaeology team believes it has found the ark

(6/29/06) - A team of Texas archaeologists believe they may have located the remains of Noah's Ark in Iran's Elburz mountain range.

"I can't imagine what it could be if it is not the Ark," said Arch Bonnema of the Bible Archaeology Search and Exploration (B.A.S.E) Institute, a Christian archeology organization dedicated to looking for biblical artifacts.

Bonnema and the other B.A.S.E. Institute members hiked for seven hours in the mountains northwest of Tehran, climbing 13,000 feet before making the apparent discovery.

"We got up to this object, nestled in the side of a hill," said Robert Cornuke, a member of the B.A.S.E. Institute. "We found something that has my heart skipping a beat."

At first, they didn't dare to hope it was the biblical boat.

"It wasn't impressive at first," Cornuke said. "Certainly didn't think it to be Noah's Ark. But when we got close, we were amazed. It looked similar to wood."

In addition, some B.A.SE. members say, their discovery didn't look very distinctive.

"It looked like the deck of any boat today," Bonnema said.

Again? If I am not mistaken, I think I read that the guy is an ex-cop, not an archeologist by training or trade. Could be mistaken though.

Also, he is a member of the Bible Archaeology Search and Exploration (B.A.S.E) Institute, a Christian archeology organization dedicated to looking for biblical artifacts. This is a scientifically recognized archeological group.

Also note that many discoveries have been made by people who had formerly been in other fields. For instance, Tombaugh was *not* a professional astronomer when he discovered Pluto. A majority of comets are actually discovered by amature astronomers. There is simply not a way of saying that because a person doesn't devote 100% of their time to a given science field, that they aren't legitimate scientists.

I sem to recall reading in the monthly magazine of the American Museum of Natural History and article about finding the Ark in the early 1960's. They even published an aerial photograph of the hull lying on Mt. Ararat in Turkey.

I remember the article you are referring to, but that was a different expedition than this one. National Geographic had an hour show about it, in fact, in the early 70's (?).

What NG did find on that expedition is that the wood samples that they located were between 8,000 and 12,000 years old, by carbon dating. That should be pretty close to when the flood occurred, according to other scientific data, including genetics.

Redbird Legends are interesting...

Well I think there's not as yet enough evidence to corroborate the stories and may never be... People want to believe in these things and fill in the missing pieces for themsleves.

See a map of the Elburz:

http://concise.britannica.com/ebc/art-54788

There's also an ancient legend in Zoroastrian writings about a "Var" or enclosure that was supposed to be a cave to preserve the seeds of life during an ice age:

O Yima! To this mighty Vara then carry families of all males and females who are on this earth most exalted, most excellent, and most beautiful. To the Vara carry the families of all sorts of cattle on this earth, which are most exalted, most excellent and most beautiful.

"To that place carry the seeds of all trees which are most exalted and sweetest of odour on this earth, carry the seeds of all food most eatable in this world and sweetest of odour. Make these couples unfailing in their love, and everlasting by reproduction; so long as the Aryans stay in the enclosure.

"There should be no person who quarrels, no one who slanders, no impure person. There should be no one with filthiness, no one with deceit nor meanness. There should be none speaking evil words, no one with an embellishment of evil spread over the body (a skin disease), no one here who in general has any characteristic of the evil one.

"Make three levels in the mighty Vara. In the uppermost level, make nine such wide enclosures, in the middle level, make six. In the lowermost level, make three enclosures. In the uppermost wide enclosure let 1000 couples, men and women live. In the middle let 600 couples live, in the lowest enclosure let 300 couples pass their lives.

"High above each of these enclosures, use a golden instrument and make doors and windows. By self-light should the inner parts be illumined..."

Some of the American Indians believe they emerged from cavern structures under the earth. I think it's very interesting to comntemplate these things but there's not a lot of evidence out there yet to confirm anything.

Baha'u'llah's family lived in the province of Nur which is in the Elburz area:

Interesting. If it were true. What "other scientific data"? Every fact available to us contradicts a global Flood. Two points only: Today we have salt water fish and sweet water fish. Was the Flood sweet or salt? How did the other kind of fish survive? How did plants survive the immersion? And don't get me started on the multiple disproofs from geology.

So because it is recent it is possible? My point was that the ark has supposedly been found a few times in different locations, and none have even proven that it was a boat, let alone a boat built by a man named Noah.
I'm not really very familiar with the Gilgamesh fable, but doesn't it involve a boat as well? If so, how do we know that isn't the boat from that story and not Noah?
I too am curious to see this "other scientific data" supporting the Bible flood story.
