A Man falls in a hole

Posted 9th August 2009 at 05:27 AM by Rev Chard

A man falls in a hole –

- Christian version:
YouTube - A Man Fell in a Hole

- Atheist version:
A guy walks along a dirt road and happens to fall into a deep hole.
A Catholic happens to be walking by and says, “You’ve fallen into a hole. That’s a shame. You must have done something wrong and God is punishing you.” So he leaves.
A Protestant happens to be walking by and sees the guy in the hole. “Providence put you there so you must need to learn something from this.” So he leaves.
An evangelical happens to be walking by and asks, “Do you know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior?”
“Yes,” the man responds.
“Great,” the evangelical responds and leaves.
An atheist walks by and sees the guy in the hole. He reaches down and pulls the guy out.

-Friend version:
This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can't get out. A doctor passes by, and the guy shouts up, "Hey, you, can you help me out?" The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a priest comes along, and the guy shouts up, "Father, I'm down in this hole. Can you help me out?" The priest writes a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by. "Hey, Joe, it's me. Can you help me Out" And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, "Are you nuts? Now we're both down here." The friend says, "Yeah, but I've been down here before - and I know the way out."

OK, are you ready for my (W)hole message?

A man is walking along life’s journey and he falls into a hole that he can’t get out of.

He can’t get out of the hole because he either doesn’t have the ability or he doesn’t have the materials needed to escape.

There is a way out but the man can’t see it because it is blocked by a rock which he can’t see past.

To make matters worse, occasionally the tide comes in and fills the hole, part way up with water. It is at these times when the man calls out for help.

You hear the cries for help. What do you do?

Do you do nothing?
Do you tell the man that he got himself in there and he can get himself out?
Do you throw the man something to float above the water on?
Do you help throw the man a rope, get him out of the hole and then leave?
Do you help the man to see past the rock to the way out?
Do you help the man out of the hole, remove the rock blocking the way out, barricade the hole and make sure the man is safely on his way?

You do nothing?
Maybe you feel you don’t have the ability to help. Maybe you are in our own hole and need help yourself.

You tell the man that he got himself in there and he can get himself out?
Are you your brother’s keeper? He got himself into a hole, he can get himself out.

You throw the man something to float above the water on?
You help him through the current crisis then he is on his own.

You help throw the man a rope, get him out of the hole and then leave?
You got him out of the hole; the rest is up to him.

You help the man to see past the rock to the way out?
The solution is there, the man can help himself, and you help him to see it.

You help the man out of the hole, remove the rock blocking the way out, barricade the hole and make sure the man is safely on his way?
You get him out of the hole, show him how he could have gotten out on his own in case he falls back in, barricade the hole so it will be less likely that he will fall back in, and then help him back along his journey.

Here are some of the holes along our journey:

Spiritual holes:
A crisis of faith, which is not to be confused with being without faith, for there is those without faith who are perfectly happy and moving forward along the path which they journey.

Financial holes:
In the current world economy many find themselves in financial debt. They get in over there heads and just can’t make ends meet. Maybe they lost their income? Maybe they are living beyond their means? Maybe inflation has outpaced their income?

Medical holes:
Illness and injury can hit at anytime. Even if we are prepared, things can quickly go beyond what we were prepared for.

Emotional holes:
How we are able to react to what happens around us has a lot to do with our emotional well being. Sometimes things can just get to be to much for us.

Are you in a hole? What kind of hole are you in? What kind of help are you looking for? Do you just want help keeping above the water? Do you need help seeing past a rock? If you get out of this hole, will you just fall back in? Are you willing to accept help?

Others around you are in holes. What kind of help can you give? What kind of help are you willing to give?

We are all children of the Universe and only together may we all be saved

I help people out of holes all the time I just wish some people wouldn't jump back in after the 50th time I'v helped them.

Allow me to add that the underlying message in all four stories, IMO is this: If you know someone who has fallen in a hole, the first thing you must do is recognize what type of hole it is and them provide the appropriate assistance.

A band aid doesn't help a broken bone, spiritual guidance doesn't pay the bills, and money doesn't mend a broken life.

Thank you for helping others, but I must ask: Are the holes the problem or just the symptom of the problem?

A symptom of a problem I think. Like I knew lotsa of people who can't pay their bills but if they'd quit wasting money on stuff they don't need they could.

So the mismanagement of their money is the “rock blocking their escape that they can’t see past”. Giving them money doesn’t get them out of the hole; it just raises them above the water.
I’ve been on both sides of this equation. I wish you all the best.
