I found myself asking the question "Who am I?" alot since then. It quiets my mind when I do, because there's no immediate answer. I find myself in a state of what I can only call "listening." It's similar to the state I'm in when I'm painting - though when I'm involved in day-to-day activities it seems to be harder to "take no thought" (as Viv would say).

The more aware I am, the more I notice my tendency towards negative self-judgement. Even though I know I'm more than my outer appearance, gender, occupation, etc, I often let other labels creep in (such as "I'm a bad housekeeper, parent, etc).... It almost seems to be a habit. Tolle's book has helped me so much, both in recognizing the ego's voice, and in seeing glimpses of the Self.
Angel, I am trying to be in the habit of self-inquiry and listening. It quietens my mind. Ramana Maharshi taught self inquiry and now Adyashanti and it works. Every spare moment I am asking "Who Am I? For whom do these thoughts arise? Who is this awareness?"

I have tried to understand what "Who am I?" means. I Googled some variations on that theme, and found that almost all hits could be classified as written by either

1) poets,
2) psychologists advertising help to confused persons, or
3) self-confessed drug addicts.

Is the book discussed available on the Internet? Not that I feel very inclined to read it anyway, but I just want to know if this thread is just a trick to sell the book, or in some way genuine.

There is no answer to the "Who Am I" question. The point is you don't want an answer. It just quiets the mind.

Yes, A New Earth is for sale on the internet. We aren't selling it here. It is being studied worldwide by many groups. Oprah Winfrey ran a 10 week webcast on this book and people from all over the world interacted via Skype.

The webcasts are still available on Oprah.com.

You know, I think we spend a great deal of our lives (especially in our younger years) trying to pretend as if we have no pain inside.

I agree Angel and that is why Tolle's insight on the pain body has been so helpful for me.

I think pain and suffering can be attributed to our attachments to conditions, things, circumstances, people, etc. In other words pain is caused by a sense of loss.

Chapter 9

Quote:
Your life has inner purpose and outer purpose. Inner purpose concerns
Being and is primary, outer purpose concerns doing and is secondary. Your outer purpose can change over time. It varies greatly from person to person. Finding and living in alignment with the inner purpose is the foundation for fulfilling your outer purpose. it is the basis for true success.

With the grace of awakening comes responsibility. you can either try to go on as if nothing has happened or you can see the significance and recognize the arising of awareness as the most important thing that can happen to you.

Quote:
The paradox is that the foundation for greatness is honoring the small things of the present moment instead of pursuing the idea of greatness.

Do you think you have aligned your inner and outer purpose?

What small things have you honored?

What frustrates me sometimes is that I'll get rid of one attachment only to pick up another! There's an endless list of things to take the place of stilling the mind.

hmmmm........

I thought I had acheived real alignment through my artwork. Infact, through my work I've been able to experience Spirit working through me as I "watched" the painting unfold. I also had an inner voice tell me that "if you can learn how to paint, you can learn how to live." Lately, though, it hasn't come as easily and sales have slowed. I'm trying to focus on the "being" part of things, but it sure is hard when you wonder if you're going to have to refinance your house......

I've enjoyed the "small things" lately - it really helps towards maintaining inner peace. It gets me into that meditative frame of mind fairly quickly, and I use it whenever I think about it. I just can't help but think that Eckhart had a nice savings account when he sat on that bench years ago........ Know what I mean?

Thank you for he good posts.

You have posed a very interesting situation. You feel aligned with your artwork. However, it doesn't cover the house payment. Remember our purpose changes from time to time. I wonder if it works to attach a need for a certain amount of money to your life purpose. At this point your purpose might be to find a way to keep from refinancing your house.

I think you can be in alignment with your art and find ways to earn more money.

Chapter10

Quote:
Awakened doing is the alignment of your outer purpose--what you do--with your inner purpose--awakening and staying awake. There are three modalities of awakened doing: acceptance, enjoyment and enthusiasm. "Each one represents a certain vibrational frequency of consciousness. You need to be vigilant to make sure that one of them operaters whenever you are engaged in doing anyghing at all--from the most simple task to the most complex. If you are not in the state of either acceptance, enjoyment or enthusiasm, look closely and you will find that you are creating suffering for yourself and others."

How has this book effected your life?
