Amen! You are absolutely correct my friend. In the sermon on the mount Jesus is talking about his followers individually also. It isn't "either or" its "both and". He is speaking about the people individually and about his hierarchical Church. Both would be a visible and not invisible church. One interpretation does not disregard the other. The scripture here is polyvalent and has many levels of meaning. Rather both of these meaning flow and fit in the context of other scriptural passages. Especially since Jesus founded a visible hierarchical/magisterial Church separate from that of the individual church(Matt 18:15-20,) that would be his voice to the world(Matt 10:40, Lk 10:16) and proclaim his gospel(Matt 28:16-20). and it would be this visible hierarchical church that would gather in council and make authoritative decisions about the faith(Acts 15:1-28). And since the early Fathers of the church that were taught by the apostles themselves, fathers like Ignatius of Antioch in 110 Ad and St Irenaeus(180 Ad) show us that the church is hierarchical and visible, then this makes all the more sense in the world to interpret the passages this way.
Thank you again for your good insight, And God bless you always my friend Paul.
