Sacrament of confession

This holy Sacrament which Jesus himself gave to his new covenant priest to perform(Jn 20:21-23) is the sacrament of love and the outpouring of the graces of the Cross. The graces received at confession are abundant. Graces to help us avoid the near occasion of sin. Jesus Christ is the priest behind the priest, Jesus is the one who through his earthly priest absolves the sins of the penitent. Many Mystics and saints would speak of this sacrament as meeting Christ in the confessional. The sacraments are all personal meetings with the Lord in a physical/spiritual way. The Cross was redemption accomplished. The sacrament of reconciliation is redemption applied in a personal way. This sacrament is foreshadowed in the old testament in Leviticus and fulfills the Old covenant Sacrifices and priesthood who were but a shadow and image of the good things to come in Christ new covenant ministerial priesthood.

The early Church fathers spoke of this sacrament:

And it is interesting that exorcist like Fr Gabriell Amorth(Chief exorcist of Rome) will tell you that a good sacramental confession is stronger than any exorcism. The devil fears it. So if you have not been to confession in a long time do not fear and hesitate. The Lord awaits you in the confessional and longs to reconcile himself to you and give you a abundance of graces.

God bless!

In Jesus through Mary,
Athanasius

Hi Athanasius and welcome to the forum! Thanks for your post. On a personal note, I feel the sincerity and reverence you have for God. And even though I'm not of the Catholic faith, I admire and respect the saints and mystics of that tradition.

I hope that you'll enjoy sharing your faith, and learning from those of other faiths here, as we're all "in the same boat" so to speak, in our journey towards God. May you travel well!
