Miss South Carolina

Host Mario Lopez stood by as she was asked, “Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?”

Miss South Carolina answered, “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.”

It was sad

Remember, this is only a teenagrer, and I would say that she basically had an attack of nerves and forgot the actually question. One of the awful things about our electronic world, is that momentary lapses -- which we all suffer -- can be immortalized and flashed around the world for everyone to guffaw over.

However, with an answer like that, she could be hired on as a speech writer for the Bush administration.

"Be Seeing you..."

How can you argue with that?

Possible answers:

1. A fifth of Americans are under 3 years old.
2. A fifth of Americans may have just consumed a fifth.
3. They weren't listening in school.
4. They are from other countries originally.
5. They have terminal myopia.
6. They aren't Martians, because they knew how to get here.

I agree Eolas, she must have been under a lot of pressure to come up with an answer like that. It's sad that these kids are trained to say things in a certain way and forget that what they say should make sense too.

Simple bias. She wasn't at her best. If she had given this interview while wearing a bikini who would have cared? We would have all been focused on the important realities being exposed and not superficial conceptual errors. No justice.
