The Golden Rule of eleven different faiths.

Here is an interesting little tidbit I found. Listed; the Golden Rule of eleven different faiths. How could we have gone wrong?

Golden Rules

BAHA'I
"Blessed is he who preferreth his brother before himself."
Baha'u'llah, Tablets of Baha'u'lla 71

BUDDHISM
"Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful."
Udana-Varga, 5:18

CHRISTIANITY
" All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them." Matthew 7:12

CONFUCIANISM
"Do not unto others what you would not have them do unto you."
Analects 15:23

HINDUISM
" This is the sum of duty; do naught unto others which would cause you pain if done to you." Mahabharata 5:1517

ISLAM
" No one of you is a believer until he desires for his brother that which he desires for himself." Hadith

JAINISM
" In happiness and suffering, in joy and grief, we should regard all creatures as we regard our own self." Lord Mahavir 24th Tirthankara

JUDAISM
" What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow man. That is the law, all the rest is commentary." Talmud, Shabbat 3la

NATIVE AMERICAN
" Respect for all life is the foundation."
The Great Law of Peace

SIKHISM
" Don't create enmity with anyone as God is within everyone."
Guru Arjan Devji 259 Guru Granth Sahib

ZOROASTRIANISM
" That nature only is good when it shall not do unto another whatever is not good for it's own self." Dadistan-i-Dinik,945

What goes around comes around. Great find, Martha, thank you.

And in the Wiccan Rede (If no harm is done, do as you will).

Thanks for moving me LK, I wasn't quite sure where to post. I figured it would be safe in general discussions.
Thanks also for the addition to the list.

Great post, Martha!
I ran across a couple more to add to your list:
Taoism: "Regard your neighbor's gain as your own gain, and your neighbor's loss as your own loss." T'ai Shang Kan Ying P'ien
Shinto: "The heart of the person before you is a mirror. See there your own form."

Real nice one's Carnemuerte. I particularly liked the Shinto one. Both are admirable. Thanks.

I see i am quite late to this discussion, but this is something i frequently think about. As a Baha'i I believe that there is only one God, and that is why the message is so similar throughout the religions.

If we could really grasp the concept of this "Golden Rule", perhaps we wouldn't have needed so many messengers. But alas, we are a stubborn breed.

I believe that this one rule, if followed by everyone, could bring peace on earth instantly. It's so simple really.

I don't like the Golden Rule. It's too elitistic and intolerant to me: I know what's best for you, so I'll treat you the way I see fit, and don't you protest. Or as applied by a masochist: I want people to hurt me. So, I'm out in the streets hurting people.

I prefer trying to treat people the way they wish to be treated.
