Does Windows XP Service Pack 2 really make a pc more secure?
Let's look at the different aspects of Service Pack 2 and what it does.
ENABLES WINDOWS FIREWALL
--------------------------
Windows Firewall comes integrated with Windows XP. It can be turned
on in a matter of seconds without installation of SP 2.
Windows Firewall is very basic. It does a somewhat satisfactory job
of blocking unsolicited software and occasionaly an odd trojan attack.
However, because Windows Firewall does not offer outbound filtering,
this does not stop an infection on the pc from making an OUTGOING connection to it's host.Malicious code can easily turn of the firewall, and Microsoft are aware of this. In my opinion, Windows Firewall isn't more than a mere patch to deploy the LSASS exploit. This firewall does nothing to block unwanted outgoing traffic, such as the kind that enables adware and spyware to communicate with central servers.
PATCHES SEVERAL EXPLOITS
----------------------------
That it does. OLD exploits. One that attackers do not bother trying to
exploit anymore. Service Pack 2 is moe a deploy for them; they realize
these old explots have had patches released, and move on to newer things.
Closing old security holes always seems to open new ones.Updates that fix holes are notorious for introducing new problems.t's a vicious circle which shows no signs of ending. Even with SP2, flaws are on the rise. Bottom line is. While there is MS, there are exploits. Patch, restart, patch. SP2 is merely a band aid. Enough said.
The "security" problem lies in the fact that people are still looking at porn on their PCs, clicking in pop-ups, and d/l viruses through screensavers and free smilies, and falling for things such as "Hi-5" or "Friend Network" emails that are only there to fish email addresses for spam.
INTERNET EXPLORER POPUP BLOCKER/DOWNLOAD
-----------------------------------------
You mean the one Firefox and Maxthon come with preinstalled? I am
suprised MS got on the ball and finally made one. It was revealed that getting around the pop-up window blocker in Internet Explorer is relatively easy to do.Of course, there'll always be new exploits and way of bypassing things.Several popup blockers(which have been freely available on the net for months)have been around for eternity. IE does not let you disable your
history. It has a pop-up blocker, but FireFox's pop-up blocker is alot more effective.
Solution? Is there one?
