Debate: Redemptive suffering and notion of the "greater good"

This is the first of a four-part debate on the problem of evil between myself (Harvey1) and Evangelicalhumanist (EH). We both have agreed on an alternative debating format for these four-part debates to minimize the time requirements. The format of responses are as follows:
  • Round 1) Introduction to the topic (e.g., state our position on this topic, what is it that we wish to prove, why our position matters: what would it mean if we are right, what it would mean if we are wrong, the goal of this debate, etc.)
  • Round 2) Main Argument/Evidence (state only the central argument in favor of your position with supporting evidence)
  • Round 3) Cite 2 or 3 other Arguments/Evidence that support your thesis
  • Round 4) Main Counter-Argument/Evidence (state only the central argument that is against your position), and show why this does not prove your position false
  • Round 5) Cite 2 or 3 other Counter-Arguments/Evidence and show why these do not prove your position false
  • Summarize

We will keep our responses to 600 words or less (approximately), and the summarize post will not contain new arguments or evidence. It will be a summary of existing arguments. There is no time limit on responses, although we both agree to move the debate along within a reasonable timeframe that fits into our time schedules. These are individual essay responses, and this debate is not intended to respond to the opponent's each and every point. However, we may refer from time to time to the opponent to keep this as a debate. Although, since we are not responding directly to our opponent, the goal is to keep this as a friendly debate.
