How has this effect gender roles? What do you see as the future of marriage and/or couples. Is there a new role for men?

Ha! No some claim....
I don't feel that having children without a father and mother is structurally the best option available in general. I'm not saying an abusive relationship is to be preserved. Nor am I saying perfectly good children can be raised by other combinations. But as a matter of statistical averages, one would want the best combination to be the most common one.
All that being said, it is high time women assumed a greater share of the burden of society. Hmmm - that's not the way this is normally framed, eh? It's normally framed as men having run things and oppressed or denied women the privileges and rights of being members of society. But turn it around - men have run things, been "in charge". Such has it's costs - don't men die earlier? Suffer more medical problems?
Or is this something of the natural, appropriate, way? Perhaps men are supposed to be protectors of the family, to be "out there", out of the house, to get themselves hurt so that women and children don't. Perhaps something of moral decay of society is because men are letting women having children alone. They can walk away. But does this mean that some of the aggressive qualities are learned and if men spent more time around children they would be less aggressive?
Hmmmm.....
