I've done three different things. Most often I've ignored them. Sometimes when they get real close I tap the breaks. Sometimes, since I live in the countryside, I take off at a significant speed - but that's very rare.
Just to round out driving etiquette I've often altered people to let them know they have a low tire too, but never from behind.... |

BTW, this was a rare combination. I was tailgated by an 18 wheeler once and felt he was a bit pissed off. I had passed him but didn't do things meanly or anything. Thing was, he chased me. Bit dicey. So I got out of there. I once saw an 18 wheeler dangerously cut off several cars on a highway. Young kids in a car may be a pain but big trucks are dangerous to many cars. Now those have been the exceptions - most of the time the big trucks are very courteous and even communicative with flashing lights and so on. |

I am not a slow-poke driver. I usually drive 40 mph in a 35 mph zone. At that speed, only a truly nasty cop would ticket you. If someone tailgates me, I look at them in my rear view mirror and wave my hand across it as a signal that I am aware of the tailgating and do not approve of it. In no case will I increase my speed. If the person persists in tailgating me, I will tap the break. If that doesn't work I will actually slow my speed. I refuse to be bullied by tailgaters.
For some reason, I find more females tailgating me than males. ???? |

If I can, I pull over and let the person go by. That way I don't have to think about them being on my bumper. If I can't pull over I continue to drive as I was doing before they began to tailgate. I really dislike someone tailgaiting.
