A Drop of Water

Quote:
A Zen master named Gisan asked a young student to bring him a pail of water to cool his bath.

The student brought the water and, after cooling the bath, threw on to the ground the little that was left over.

"You dunce!" the master scolded him. "Why didn't you give the rest of the water to the plants? What right have you to waste even one drop of water in this temple?"

The young student attained Zen in that instant. He changed his name to Tekisui, which means a drop of water.

What does a drop of water symbolize and why did the the student attain zen?

The drop of water symbolized exactly what it was. A drop of water.

Does it have something to do with the trickle down theory?

I would explore the ideals of relationships. There is also seeing something for oneself rather than because someone says so, no matter who they are.

He was the drop, and he had been wasting his life away, tossed this way and that by those around him telling him one thing or another. At the same time he was connected -water to water- with those around him. But in honoring his own water he had to honor it in others. It is a blend of independence and dependence and interdependence, each in its way, and he was an agent charting his course.

Or that's what pops in my head right now.

I agree with Master Vigil. I don’t think the drop of water symbolizes anything. I think that what lead this person to enlightenment was the sudden realization of the importance of a drop of water. Of every drop of water. In other words the significance of everything.
