I don't see this as a problem at all. I would never go up to someone that I know is Jewish, or of some other faith, and wish them Merry Christmas. And I doubt anyone would walk up to me and wish me a Happy Hannukah.
If it's someone I know, and I know they celebrate Christmas, then of course I will wish them the very merriest of Christmases. But if it's a complete stranger, I think it is best to simply wish them Happy Holidays. That way, it encompasses just about anything (other than if they don't celebrate Holidays whatsoever). I think wishing people "Happy Holidays" is perfectly acceptable. And for those who are upset, thinking it's taking Christ out of the Holidays. Let's go up to them and wish them a Happy Hannukah, and see what they say. Heh heh. |

![]() I wish people 'Merry Christmas with all the peace and love that Christ taught us to share with each other, and the cards we send people are going to reference Christ's birth. I see no reason anyone should be offended by 'Merry Christmas', and If someone were to wish me 'Happy Hanukkah', I would thank the person for the sincere wishes and not feel offended. I have seen a few stores that still use 'Merry Christmas, and I'm going to make a special effort to patronize them, and here's a list from Bill O'Reilly's blog of stores and how they are handling Merry Christmas. At the end of the day, the stores do not give a rat's rear-end about Christmas, Hanukkah, or any other holiday. They will do what brings in the most dollars and creates the least negative press. I'm sure that's what they thought they were doing when they decdied to take the 'Christ out of Christmas'. If enough people make enough noise, maybe some of them will bring it back.

You can't spell Christmas without Christ...
All this PC crap is really getting under my skin. We are supposed to have freedom "of" religion not freedom "from" religion. |

Like I said, it really doesn't bother me at all. The way I see it is, I don't mind discussing different religions with people. However, I do not like other people's religions or views forced on me. While saying "Merry Christmas" may not bother many, there are those out there who it does bother.
So, if I don't know the person's religion I am speaking to, I feel it doesn't take much effort to be nice and say, "Happy Holidays". I know on several occassions we've been visited by Jehovah's Witnesses on Christmas morning. Personally, I think that's in bad taste that our Christmas celebration was interupted by people who wanted to preach their religion to us. There are Christians (such as Jehovah's Witnesses) who don't believe in celebrations. There are Christians who love Christ, but are fed up with the commericial holiday Christmas has become, and want no part of it. There are even those who refer to things as Santa Claus as Satan Claus. There are those who don't believe in anything, yet still celebrate the holiday. There are the children who don't really understand the meaning of Christmas yet, and just are beside themselves at the thought of Santa's arrival. Maybe I'm too much of a peacemaker. But I see no reason to force others to celebrate the Holidays the same way that I do. So, I simply wish those I don't know the Happiest of Holidays. |
