Psychology vs/ Religion
Quote:
Hmmm. I'm sure psychology would LIKE to replace Religion in the hearts of the masses. Think of all the dollars that could be diverted into other coffers that are now being deposited in Sunday collection baskets. But I think the point is a good one, since Dr.Phil is so widely seen, via the teley, and he's so darn charming, how could anyone not listen to his sage advise? And why do we need those stuffy old priests, padres, ministers, and others who are constantly exhorting us to look (upward) to GOD for our example and advice? It's much more human to believe, extol, and rely on human perspective, for our Ultimate Reality. I think the philosphical label is Humanism, matter of fact. And these days, if you ain't a Humanist, you're a Fundamentalist, those seem to be the two major camps. It's only in-between, in the little spaces, that esotericists can thrive and discover what everyone else is convinced doesn't exist: Absolute Truth. Such is the stuff of my opinion, anyway.( By way of an aside, I do maintain that a pure psychology will lead a person to the Truth, however, such a psychology is not to be found in our modern cornucopia of offerings.) |

Well, it has not suceeded as yet.
However, Dr. Phil sure seems to be a lot like Jerry Fallwell to me, he's far too charming to be Pat Robertson, even though he is every bit as demeaning in his language in regard to others. Regards, Scott |

I don't think so. Religion fulfills a need to fill a void that people feel, and the best psychoanalysis doesn't get rid of that void, so just from that aspect, I don't think that religion will be replaced. Religion may become more diverse, though.
Also, psychologists will usually say that even with the tools and knowledge we have today, we STILL don't know why people think the way they do. That is the reason that mental illness is handled by treating the symptoms rather than the illness. That is what most of those meds are for, treating symptoms. |

Both can tell you many things about yourself, but neither can tell you everything. To say one will succeed another is like saying... will baseball replace basketball someday?
