Butterfly Opera anyone?

I just watched a performance of "Sadko" by the Kirov Ballet and opera troop...

"The Song of India" by Rimsky Korsakov is inspiring.. A lot of good opera is avaialble on DVD.

How many of you guys like opera?

I used to love it, I probably still do, but don't listen to it anymore.

I got turned off to opera at a rather young age and even now am very selective so to speak.

My mother had a reputation in the field of opera and on occasion, certain big names when appearing in NY would drop by. I won't mention his name but one time this famous singer came to visit and my mother who was Italian had her father visiting as well. When in Russia he was involved with Italian operatic performances for the Russian nobility

Of course the large bottles of red wine were on the table and seated at this table were two good operatic singers with egos both getting good and crocked.

An argument broke out as to how a particular opera should be sung and each in turn sang it at the other and as out of key proper for the influence of this potent red wine. With these two singers nothing could be done other than to let the battle run its course after which both claim victory and it is forgotten. However for a young kid with a sensitive ear this battle of sounds beween two good but crocked singers was worse than listening to a struggle between two dentist's drills. Since then I cringe and brace myself when I know that high note is coming.

I think some operas have a message in them...

Sadko is about a bard who has an adverturous soul and wants to explore the world...actually travel the seas to visit strange lands... The people of Novgorad are too practical for him and eventually he visits a Lake nearby where a swan becomes the daughter of the Sea King named Volkhova ...sort of Neptune... She (Volkhova) allures him and says he can have some fish with golden fins and he goes home telling his wife he wants to leave her...and take off with Volkhova.

He also challenges the merchants of Novgorad with the deal that he can produce fish with golden scales... They offer their wealth if he can produce this... Lo and behold he does... but later Sadko gives them back their wealth.

The last scenes are when Sadko awakens by the Lake and realized it was all a dream... His wife approaches and they have a reunion... Merchants from India, Venice and the north join the final chorus and Sadko also realizes that the River Volkhova which is an embodiment of the Swan Princess is also real..

The music, costumes and sets are fantastic!

Accoring to the Rosicrucian Philosophy, Max Heindel has written much with regards to the esoteric messages opera has interjected into it's themes and characters.

I tend to like opera and musicals. Mostly I don't get to see them because DVD doesn't do them justice and I can't afford the ticket often. But when I get to go, I have a great time.

I'm not a huge fan of it, especially since it's usually in a language that I don't understand.

have you ever heard of Dwayne Croft?

I used to practice the piano really hard! Then I'd get together with the soloist, who wouild sight-read the singing part. We go to perform and the singer gets all the credit! I can do without the stress!

I'm not really a fan, but I have listened to some of the more popular stuff and can enjoy musicals.
