The Bigger The Animal.....

....the more concern we have about killing it.

Why is this?

My first take on this is that people tend to anthropomorphize animals: the larger the animal, the more 'human' traits it exhibits.

To a point, I agree. But what we're stuck in a Catch 22-- if we don't kill something, we starve to death. However, as with many groups that relied on hunting, there still was a respect for that which they had to kill. I honestly believe most of us have lost that sense of lament.

I don't agree. My sister hunts elk and deer, but I don't think she could kill a cat or a dog, unless they were terminaly ill.

The only animals I kill are garden pests like the Spanish slug. I'm all right with somebody unknown killing an unknown pig or a cow for me to eat, as long as I feel assured that it is killed in a humane way. Before it became wrong, I tried whale beef. I had no problem with that big an animal having been killed for food.
