Although we muslims follow the Solar calender in everyday life but our Muslim calender is Lunar .
We have 12 months in a year and the days vary according to the appearence of the moon. Normal days are 29 or 30 in a month. There is a month called Ramzan (Ramadan). Allah tells us that The Holy Koran was revealed to our Prophet Muhammad during this month. The Angel Jibrail (Gabriel) was blessed by Allah to gift the revelation to Prophet Muhammad . It is mandatory for all muslims to fast for a whole month. Very small children, Very old, Sick ,pregnant females and people in journey are exempted. Females menstrurating are also exempted for those days only. We are suppose to eat & drink around 2 hours before Sunrise and at the call of our FAJR Morning Prayer stop eating . The process is called Sehr . The whole day we cannot eat or drink any solid or liquid, and at Sunset at the call of Maghrib Prayer we have to break our fast by first eating a Date or even with a pinch of salt. The process is called Iftar . We can eat and drink what ever Halal (kind of kosher) food as much as we like to. All this repeated for nearly 29 to 30 days . All through out the month we are supposed to increase our worship towards Allah and Give alot of Charity ...Money ,food & clothes to the poor & needy . All Muslims have to give a Islamic Welfare Tax called ZAKAT on Money, Gold & Silver, which has been in our posession for 1 whole year . We need to give 2 1/2 % on the total current value. And The money is to be given to the poor & needy. One can donate the money to Hospitals, to Welfare Trusts,Charities or Poor or needy individuals . Zakat is a must . After 27 days are over a Committee of Muslim Scholars gather together to sight the Moon . If the new Moon or Crescent appears after 27/28/ 29/30 days Eid is Celebrated . This is The greatest of Muslim festival / celebration , First thing in the morning we are suppose to give Charity to the needy & poor yet again called Fitra, Also men/women wear New clothes & the males go to the Mosque & offer Eid Salat(Prayer) . After prayers the men greet & shake hands with each other regardless. We visit each other, family & friends , exchange gifts with loved ones & give gifts and money to the poor, Cook big festive meals, particularly lots of traditional deserts, Party around, some people go for picnics etc . All this goes on for atleast 2/3 days. Generally its a complete public holiday in our country . |
