Do tell about the security issues... I am unaware...
I was on livejournal before myspace and made many a post there, to say the least!

There was quite a flap earlier this year that started out with many users having their personal information 'accidentally' given to people who had no business getting that information, including spammers. While that was being investigated, they found out that several men were using myspace to connect with underage girls (I know that at least one of those men was subsequently arrested, though I haven't heard about any of the others.) Then a server was hacked. Again, I haven't heard if they caught the person or people that did that. But they (the ones who run myspace) didn't immediately close the security hole, so someone else (or maybe the same person that originally hacked the server) sent out a virus. Luckily, this was discovered very quickly by an antivirus company (*not* one of the big two, incidentally). Myspace has had quite a roller coaster ride.
It is probably not all that much less secure than most sites, but as more and more people use it, it just becomes a more attractive target. |

I've heard of problems with ICQ, too. Is there a site which lists which sites have tight security or not? friendster, hi5, myspace, livejournal, etc....
I don't put any real info on myspace anyway.

I think it has more to do with popularity than anything...if it is popular, hackers will try to take advantage of it. I've not heard of icq spreading viruses or being the haven for predators, however it could certainly be used for spreading spam and so forth. (I use ICQ, but strictly for business, and I have to accept a person before they can even contact me.)

it's a paradox then:
the securest sites are so obscure no one knows about them...
