Two Moons

Two moons on 27 August

27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for......... ....

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August.

It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles
of earth.

Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am .

It will look like the earth has 2 moons.

The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

While it might be quite bright that night, It couldn't possibly look as large as the Full Moon.

The Moon is about 1/6 the size of the Earth (its diameter 2159 miles) ; Mars is about 1/3 the size of Earth (its diameter is 4200 miles). But the Moon is 250,000 miles away, while Mars will be nearly 220 times further away.

There is no way an object that is about twice the diameter of another object can look as large as it, when it is 200+ times further away! That's like saying a softball (diameter 4 1/2") two football fields away would look the same relative size as a baseball (diameter 2 7/8") held at arm's length away from you.

There will be a near approach of Mars (perigee) in December , when it approaches 55 million miles distant, but in August/September it will still be 1 Astronomical Unit distant (98 million miles).

It would appear that, wherever you got this information from, it has been floating around since 2003, when there was a remarkably close approach between Mars and Earth, which will not be prepeated until 2287!

http://seds.org/~spider//spider/Mars/mars2003.html

However, if you check that link, you will see tha the maximum size was reported to be about 25.14 seconds of arc. In comparsion, the Moon appears to cover 1800 seconds of arc.

"Be seeing you..." (and Mars!)
