Dumbledore is Gay!

From Newsweek:

In front of a full house of hardcore Potter fans at Carnegie Hall in New York, Rowling, sitting on the stage on a red velvet and carved wood throne, read from her seventh and final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," then took questions. One fan asked whether Albus Dumbledore, the head of the famed Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, had ever loved anyone. Rowling smiled. "Dumbledore is gay, actually," replied Rowling as the audience erupted in surprise. She added that, in her mind, Dumbledore had an unrequited love affair with Gellert Grindelwald, Voldemort's predecessor who appears in the seventh book. After several minutes of prolonged shouting and clapping from astonished fans, Rowling added. "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy."

I heard about this and have wondered if she said that for the "shock value" But I guess it is her character and she can do what she wishes.

Not surpising, but not all that important

Since the book is about adolescents, and adolescents mostly think adults -- particularly older adults -- are sexless creatures, I am not surprised that little was made of this in the novel. The hints are quite opaque, although they are there.

I like Dumbledore as a character, and like Rawling's series a great deal. Nothing like that would stop me from reading it. On the other hand, revelaing it may give the fundementalist "thou-shalt-not-suffer-a-witch-to-live" crowd another reason to attack the books.

As if they would like it to begin with. I read the first book just before the first film came out because I kept being asked about the "magical" aspects and wanted to have an informed opinion. The Religious wRong was already having a cow at the time about Harry Potter being "witchcraft repackaged for children."
