Did the People Overstrain the Prophets?
I hope I do not offend anyone, the following is just my point of view and I do not claim that it is really true, but it presents my current point of view.
I think there are indications that the people, who surrounded the prophets, overstrained them. For example the Prophet Moses, may he be blessed, has released hundreds of laws until it was too much for him. I still believe he was in contact with the Most High, but I don't think that he was in constant contact with him. But the people expected him to speak revelations from the Most High in almost every situation.
The Prophet Jesus, may he be blessed, wandered into the wilderness when he was baptized, so he needed time for himself alone. In other situations he kept some distance from the people.
The Prophet Muhammad, may he be blessed, experienced stress when he received revelations. There exists a Hadeeth where he told not to write down everything which he said and did, but the people did it anyway.
Here is the text that has been recorded in the Sunan of Abu-Dawood under Hadith No.
1635 (3640):
Al-Muttalib ibn Abdullah ibn Hantab said:
"Zayd ibn Thabit entered upon Mu'awiyah and asked him about a
tradition. He ordered a man to write it. Zayd said: The Apostle of Allah
(peace be upon him) ordered us not to write any of his traditions. So he
erased it."
My point is the following: Some people claim that the prophets were constantly guided by the Most High. While I don't say it is impossible, the probabilty is higher that this was not the case, because it would have caused physical stress. After all the prophets were human beings. Thus we shouldn't place every word and deed on the gold scale.
I think it is our task to compare the words of scripture with the word that is written into our hearts. There are words in the Bible, which mentions that the bellies of pregnant women were ripped open, as well in the Qur'an, to kill the disbelievers in battle. I think we have to keep in mind four things: when it was written, to whom it was written, in what situation it was written and who wrote it. Hopefully we agree that such things should never happen again. After all the Most High has given us brains to think, and I don't believe he expected from us to rely on scripture 100%, but to learn the application of the teachings out of the Holy Books so that we are ourselves like walking Holy Books.
