New Pet

I know that we didn't really need one, but we have a new pet; thanks to my mom. She got it for the kids, but it is just so cute. The kids decided that he is a he, and named him Tiny Tim.

it is an appealing little critter. Tiny Tim is a cool name.

A couple years back someone gave our son a turtle he named 'fuzzy'. even funnier when you realise he's not a kid but a middle age man.

Oh, that is funny

My boys named him, if it is even really a him. Right now it is too young to tell, but easier on mom not to argue.

I am surprised at how much I have enjoyed having the turtle in my house. He is fun to watch, and relaxing too. And when you hold him, his little claws tickle.

He's wonderful

I love turtles and tortoises; they are great creatures.

Please make sure your boys wash their hands thoroughly after handling the little guy, though. People often get salmonella when they are careless about handling reptiles.

Turtles can be great spirit guides....

They love live food, BTW. A visit to the live-bait shop will usually get you cheaper food than a pet store. At that size, maggots would be a great choice; when he gets a little bigger crickets would be good.

Sexing turtles is a bit of a trick. Males have longer front claws than rear claws...they get really, noticeably longer as the turtle gets a bit older. Males have fatter tails, and the vent is farther along the tail than in females. The rear of the plastron is flatter in females, and in males sometimes has a noticeable concavity toward the tail. All of these secondary sexual characteristics have to do with accommodations for mating, of course.

Thanks for the advice, EP. I had heard about salmonella before, so I sound like a broken record, "put the turtle down, go wash your hands, and use soap!"

I am not that worried about finding out what sex he is. The boys already decided that he is a he, and named him. At this point it is just easier not to argue, unless you would like to come and convince a 5 and 9 year old that they are wrong.

My red slider turle...

I used to own a "Tiny Tim" and we also had some Gold Fish.. well Tiny started munching their tails and pretty soon Tiny was not so tiny...

She grew and grew...

The way you can tell if it's female is that every Fall the turtle produced these white eggs... She would also look for a dark safe place to lay them in the Garden... Without a mate those eggs were infertile but that didn't stop her.

I recall one time where she actually creawled out of the aquarium and off the table and made it next door... well we didn't know what happened... In three months time later the neighbor asked if it was our turtle and it was! So we took back into our home.. letting her wander around and hide where shje pleased.

In time our red slider grew and grew and we had to find a new aquarium for our turtle.. I fed her and watched her for years and she watched me... A year ago my wife decided to gift our turtle to a guy who had an outside fountain and pond and so we decided to give her away but I felt something was lost when she left.
