A hand fasting ceremony is an old celtic tradition. There are some done in christianity, paganism, wiccan traditions and more and they vary some. There are two types. One is to commit the two people to be in union for a year and then come back in exactly a year and marry. The other is an actual wedding. I am doing the one that is a wedding.
Handfasting entails gently wrapping cords around the bride and groom’s clasped hands and tying a knot, symbolically binding the couple together in their declaration of unity. This is done within a circle of stone or whatever (in the one I am doing it will be a circle of flower petals). I will cast the circle. The couple enters from the east and as different parts are done they face all four directions partly symbolizing the sharing of characteristics between us and nature. The blessings of the elements are invoked. The vows are made and rings and ropes are consecrated. (Not in that order of course)The cords are different colors and represent different things such as honor and patience etc. Part of it involves smudging and purification with salt and water. It is so interesting. It is a great experience I am pleased to be part of. If anyone saw the movie Braveheart with Mel Gibson he was married in that movie with a handfasting ceremony. Each one is unique. ![]()

That sounds very romantic. I wonder if my partner would be up for that : )Thanks for sharing Rev.Kathy
By the way. I got married last week. It was on the day and date we got together 11 years ago. We only went through the courthouse and did nothing special. We "waited" this long...because nothing was missing, but then something happened and we were "missing" something, so we decided to tie the knot. Now I would like to do something as a ceremony in near future....hand fasting sounds interesting.
