Chamomile
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla and other species)
Chamomile is an anual herb originally native to Europe, though it has been naturalized in the US. There are many species of Chamomile, with similar properties. The listed species (German Chamomile) grows about 3 feet in height, and has small daisy-like flowers, usually appearing in late summer. The plant itself appears grayish green. The entire plant, especially the flowers, are used medicinally.
Uses: to treat colds and cold symptoms, liver disorders, wounds, burns, insomnia, indigestion, inflammation (externally as a poultice).
Tea: pour 1 cup boiling water over 2 tbsp fresh or dried flowers (or plant), cover and let steep for 10-15 minutes. Doseage: 1-2 cups per day as necessary.
Cautions: Chamomile may cause a allergic reaction in those that have ragweed allergies.
