Peppermint

Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
Aromatic perennial herb that grows up to 2 feet and height, and can spread rapidly. This plant is widely cultivated, and hybrids have been created. The leaves can have a purplish tint, especially if given too much water, and are oval in shape. The flowers appear in whorls around the central stems, and are bluish pink in color. If growing, the plant can take light shade, but the root system must be kept cool. More plants can be produced by stem divisions, and the plant will usually root readily in water. (Most members of the Mint family, such as Spearmint, horsemint, and wintergreen, can be used in the same way as can Peppermint, though the appearance can differ. All are aromatic.)

Uses: For pain, spasms, flatulence, to improve indigestion, as a general tonic, for stomach ache, pneumonia, head colds, congestion, and blocked sinuses.

Tea: pour 1 cup boiling water over 2-3 tsp of leaves, steep 15 minutes, strain. Dose is up to 2 cups a day.

A few drops of pure peppermint oil added to a hot bath is great for revitalizing, relaxing, soothing sore muscles, and is another way to clear the sinuses.
