Protein For Plant-based Diets

Protein. Not long ago, the word would likely have conjured an image of a thick steak. But in these fat-and cholesterol-conscious times, informed eaters are learning that protein comes in varied forms, many deriving from the plant world: Aromatic grain and nut pilafs, grilled tofu and vegetable kebabs, whole-grain pancakes, and black bean enchiladas are just a few examples. The coming of age of vegetarian cookery, coupled with the ongoing passion for ethnic cuisines, has stretched the definition of protein sources.

As more Americans cut back on their intake of meat and high-fat dairy products, incorporating alternative protein sources into the diet is of paramount importance. The ideal to strive for is a diet rich in plant-based foods, with those being the primary protein sources as well. Many nutritionists recommend that at least two-thirds of dietary protein be derived from plant-based foods.

Whole grains, legumes, soy products, and nuts and seeds are primary protein sources in a plant-based diet. And nearly all vegetables contribute to daily protein needs. Dairy products can also be great sources of non-plant-based proteins for those who choose to use them, with the best choices being low-fat versions of milk, yogurt and cottage cheese. Hard cheeses, butter and other full-fat dairy products pose health risks similar as meats. Those and all animal proteins, including eggs, should be used with care and moderation.

Absolutely AZ great post. I've been a vegetarian for several years now, and protein hasn't been a problem. I do have to watch for the essential fatty acids like omega 3, 6, and 9. So far flax oil has been a good way to get it, and the company "Spectrum" makes a margarine like spread that has EFA's in it.

Peace,

Mark

I've been considering becoming vegetarian. I have almost completly given up red-meat. I only eat it when I am forced to
The only thing I will have a hard time letting go of is my fish and seafood.

Finally!!

I have been yelling this for fourty years, and getting laughed at, telling that an all-plant diet is healthy+! Oh yes, us veggies have known for centuries, but big money is behind the meat, fish, and poultry industries.

Just look at our digestive system. Carnivores have tearing teeth, swallow with little or no chewing, and a relatively short intestine. Herbivores have chewing teeth, with food remaining in the mouth much longer, and long intestine. Which applies most to us?

AND please don't cook all the time, vitamins, enzymes, and amino acids are living, and therefore steaming, boiling, baking, etc. kills 'em! Cheers~

I'm an omnivore, the key is a balanced diet and life style. Meat consumed everyday and every meal is a modern problem, as is consuming no meat. The hunt for meat and gathering of plants was a primary motivator in the survival of our evolving species. We have to realize our bodies have adapted to feast and famine, while our social situation has evolved faster into a society of abundance. Where both meat and plants are readily available for consumption.

Work or "the hunt" is no longer a purely physical activity for a large portion of the population. In my opinion, society has divided into two types of activity; those working with their hands and those working with their minds. Obviously, those working with their mind need less, than those working with their hands to maintain a balance between energy absorbed and energy spent. However, those working with their minds are favored in society to gain more resources, while those working with their hands recieve less.

The lock is consumption. Each of us needs to find the right key combination that fits in the tumbler and unlocks the lock. I guess what I'm trying to convey; is there is no one diet that fits everyone universally and societal values need to be more balanced in what we reward as favorable work.

Yes! Have there been any studies of early man's teeth? I was thinking that before cooking we need the ripping and tearing teeth. Maybe teeth have evolved over the years since we have been cooking and are eating softer foods. I also believe that humans are omnivores.

Thats quite true LK, even HH the Dalai Lama must consume meat every other day for his health, so he claims to be a vegetarian for half the year

I wasn't always a vegetarian, I was raised in the farmland of PA and learned to hunt and fish at a young age, but then one day at school a kid gave me a piece of broccoli in the playground, said it was cool and everyone was doing it. So I tried it and found it to be cool and refreshing in my mouth and it felt good in my tummy, soon I was hanging around the local organic grocers looking preternatually healthy, rocking myself back and forth humming "I'd like to teach the World to Sing", wearing sandals and a Peter,Paul and Mary t-shirt.

Thanks for letting me share.

Paladin...

That's wild, my life is a direct reflection of yours going from end to start. Now, I'm stuck with meat between my teeth and groovin to the "Motor City Madman", Ted Nugent. Ain't life fun!

When you really get down to the nitty gritty, though, like quantum physics, everything is all the same thing. If, you want to really feel strange. The reality is; we are all just eating ourselves in different forms.
