Snopes.com is a good place to research Urban Legends. This Margarine vs Butter email is an old one. Since that email the makers of margarine have changed their products.
Here is a good place to read up on this: http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/butter.asp

Purely anecdotal evidence, but my body does not like margarine. Normally we use unsalted butter, but today we ate a commercially prepared garlic-toast loaf that was made with margarine. About ten minutes after we got up from the dinner table I had a severe coughing fit.
Specifically, I think I'm allergic to canola oil which is the primary component of most margarines nowadays. Things cooked in canola make me queasy. I have no problem at all with sunflower/safflower oil. (Haven't done a full assessment of soybean oil, but I regularly eat tofu without any problems.) |

Interestingly, there IS a little test you can do that will show that at least some creatures do NOT like margarine...put a little on a plate and leave it where flies, ants, and other insects can get to it, then just watch. I've done this several times, and have never found a single insect that had any interest at all in the margarine, whereas they do like butter. (I have had insects like moths and millers get caught in it, though, and they naturally die because of the oils that prevent them from breathing.)
Now, insects operate off instinct...it makes me wonder why they instinctually avoid the margarine? |
