Purim
Can i just say this is the best and most rockin holiday!!
Purim, is a festive holiday closest to the holiday of Mardi Gras with costume wearing, fun, and drinking! What is it all about? Purim celebrates the story of Esther and Mordichai in the Book of Esther. It takes place in Persia and Haman, the villian of the story, is trying to wipe out the Jewish people in the kingdom. Long story short Esther, a jewish woman who marries the king takes the advice of her cousin and adopted father Mordichai, reveals herself as a jew to the king, the king turns on Haman and his family and all thier buddies and the jews are spared! Many villages in eastern Europe who were spared from pogroms and such celebrated local Purims of their own. But it is a holiday of celebration and all around partying!! It is a mitzvot to hear the Book of Esther be read and when it is read you are supposed to drink to the name of Mordichai and drown out the name of Haman by making a bunch of racket (traditionally w/ a grogger). But you are also supposed to get so drunk that you mix up the names! oh yeah and hamentaschen!! mmmm delicious lil 3 cornered pasteries mmmmmmm more here http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday9.htm http://www.aish.com/holidays/purim/
