On Judaism: Kollel life 101
On Judaism: Kollel life 101
Although there are entire communities in Israel in which it is accepted practice for men to learn full-time in a kollel, many outside those communities have little knowledge or understanding of what that entails. A kollel is a framework where Jewish men learn Torah; according to Jewish sources, Torah study generates a kind of spiritual energy field that preserves the existence of our universe. If Torah study would stop, the world would lose its raison d'etre and simply disappear. Entering the kollel, our avrech (a term of biblical royalty) quickly takes an ancient tome - often a volume of Gemara (Talmud - the Oral Law) and strides resolutely to his makom (his designated place of study). Placing a book that was written some 1,900 years ago on a shtender (a personal lectern), he opens to where he left off yesterday. Next to him is his trusty hevruta, his study partner - and often his sparring partner as well. http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satelli...333077&apage=1

Hi Jewscout...how do you pronounch kollel is it koll el or kol lel? Is that the place of worship or like a study hall?
Why does he need a sparring partner? Does it help in some way to bring more meaning to what they are learning? What is raison? I'm really interested so I will take an hour tomorrow to look at the sites you've listed...and thanks for trying to help us better understand your religion...I don't want to be ignorant in knowing why and how's of the Jewish people. Wasn't Jesus a Jew? Thanks so much for sharing! Quote:
