Rosh HaShanah

Quote:
Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second days of Tishri. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, "head of the year" or "first of the year." Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. This name is somewhat deceptive, because there is little similarity between Rosh Hashanah, one of the holiest days of the year, and the American midnight drinking bash and daytime football game.
There is, however, one important similarity between the Jewish New Year and the American one: Many Americans use the New Year as a time to plan a better life, making "resolutions." Likewise, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year. More on this concept at Days of Awe.

The name "Rosh Hashanah" is not used in the Bible to discuss this holiday. The Bible refers to the holiday as Yom Ha-Zikkaron (the day of remembrance) or Yom Teruah (the day of the sounding of the shofar). The holiday is instituted in Leviticus 23:24-25

The shofar

It seems to me, in viewing your pics, that the shofar has no particular distinction in regards to size. Am I correct? The first pic of the shofar was grand and greatly curled. The second pic was of a shorter shofar, not so fancy. Is the shofar a rams horn or some other horned creature? Is it considered more significant because of it's size and intricate shape?

How many times have you heard the shofar blown and what effect does it have upon you? I guess I am asking if the shofar sound has a certain spiritual effect upon your soul, you essence of being. What significance do you ascribe to the blowing of the shofar, beloved of G-d?
For me as a Catholic, the singing of the Alleulia after the consecration of the Eucharist is truly uplifting. I feel as though I am joining my brothers and sisters in the complete joyful worship of G-d. There is nothing more joyful and uplifting than sending my voice up in praise and thanksgiving to G-d.
I await your reply.

This is kind of a post script. Thank you for the link. I am going to endeavor to study the Jewish thought at this particular site. I also go to www.Aishhatorah.com

This little old goy is truly seeking, and am happy to be given links to help in my quest for understanding! Thank you, Jewscout.

i've heard it a few times, if they can get it to work (for Israeli Independence Day we blow it and it took 5 guys at my shul before they finally got it to work), it can be a very moving addition to any service...you can feel it sometimes vibrate inside you...
