Cherokee Beliefs.

Beliefs

In a search for order and sustaining that order, the olden Cherokee devised a simple, yet seemingly complex belief system. Many of the elements of the original system remain today. Although some have evolved or otherwise been modified, the traditional Cherokee of today recognize the belief system as an integral part of day-to-day life.

Thank you for the link! I have always known that my great Grand Mother was an indian, but today I found out that she was a full booded cherokee princess, traded off at the young age of 13 years for a white horse.

I don't know anything about Indians and never heard that they had princesses. Any information?

Indian Princess is more of an Euro-American term than a Native one.

Sure there were chiefs Daughters, and they may have been held in higher regard due to lineage and power, but a chief was a person that was respected and revered more for their wisdom and knowledge instead of 'power'. Particularly in the Cherokee nation everything was handed down by the mothers side: wealth, status, lineage etc. You could have a Cherokee mother and an Irish father and you would be considered Cherokee, switch it around and in the tribes eyes you aren't a Cherokee. Unless of course you were adopted which is another story. - Course I am speaking of times before the trail of tears, statehood, civil war, missionaries, and small pox.

And I don't mean to belittle your new found heritage Vi, but amongst the natives that I know "my (great) grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee Princess" is almost a cliche.

True that there are those that are 'crowned' today at Pow Wows across the nation, those are just about as close to the Native version of a beauty pageant as you can get.

----------

But as I have said before, I am of Abenaki blood, the people of the dawn from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Canada. As such, that geographical area is where the vast amount of my knowledge of things Native resides; Versus where I live now in the South, also known as Cherokee Country.

Yes, I did a little research on the title of Princess and actually found many, many princesses LOL. I don't even know if the information we received concerning Cherokee is correct.

Many years ago someone from England contacted us, and told us that we were somehow cousins. I failed to ask him if he was somehow related to the Queen. LOL
