Living on the Land

Do Indians live on the land?

I've heard this many times. The answer is no and no. I'll explain.

No, the indians have never lived ON the land. Native American culture was based on living WITH the land. All creatures were treated as equals and as honored brothers. Some creatures were killed for food, but all parts of the animal was used, and praise was given to the spirit of the animal. 'Sport hunting' would have been as foriegn as turning a loved one loose in a forest and hunting them. Roots, berries, and other natural food were harvested, and the places where they occured were protected and cared for.

No, the indians no longer live with the land, with only a few exceptions. The old ways are very close to being non-existant. But there was a time, and I believe that one day, there will be again.
