Prophecies - 16th June 2009, 08:22 PM

Hello All,
arent prohecies just a game of probability? If one person makes a single prophecy then in simple terms there is a 50/50 chance that he could get it right. But if a person or a book makes numerous prophecies then if they all turn out to be correct the probability of that its guess work is virtually Zero. On the other hand if only a handful of the prophecies turn out to be correct then it can be assumed that its all guess work. Should the books/people who make false prophecies be rejected totally?

Another thing to take into consideration is self-fulfilling prophecies. The reformation of the state of Israel is usually taken to be the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy, but it was the Bible itself that caused people to back the idea of a new Israel, Christian Zionism, and such.
So not only do we have to consider probability, but we also have to consider what part the knowledge of the prophecies play in their ultimate fulfillment.

I think that prophesies should automatically be placed in the "self-fulfilling" category if they can be made to happen via human effort. This would eliminate from consideration:
  • Prophesy about future messianic figure (people can be groomed to fit the role);
  • Prophesy about the future creation of a town or nation (q.v. Israel; the town of Gimli, Manitoba, which is referenced in the Völuspá in the Poetic Edda);
  • Prophesy about the destruction of something (people will deliberately target that thing for destruction).

a load of tall ships coming to town, and some stuff about unity in our church and us all becoming one with Jesus and the Father and each other.

Any church minister worth his salt will work his parish toward unity and becoming closer to Jesus. If that is your church's current situation, then Kudos! But I think it is less about prophesy and more about elbow grease.

As for the tall ships, where do you live?

There is no power in the Universe greater than an idea whose time has come.
