I'm sorry, but a pastor who says such a thing simply does not understand what he's talking about. (That's why, by the way, that Catholic and Anglican priests have the equivalent education of a PhD.) To say that "Jesus was a fighter," and then to equate that to physical fighting for nothing more than the joy of punching somebody else's lights out and winning a prize is absolutely off the mark.

Mr. tough guy died on the cross in 3-4 hours, considerably shorter than the average crucifixion, which usually took a day or two.

Might I add that a good martial arts instructor teaches that karate etc is not to be used unless absolutely necessary....course, as to what a church may come up with, who knows...karate chops instead of rulers when you forget your weekly sunday school verse?

The Shaolin Warriors are a Buddhist group that use the martial arts not for self-defense purposes, but for mental and physical control. They go through the motions without hitting, and they are a wonder to behold.
Let me just add that centuries ago, these were actually Buddhist warriors, so the current concept that Buddhists are and were always non-violent is not correct.

These are the world famous Shaolin monks who seek the way of peace by mastering the art of bare fisted murder.
Shaolin monks only going through the motions? Tell that the the White Lotus!

I don't think this is only a commentary on religion, rather on this society as a whole.
Many of the first settlers to this country were rather conservative in terms of sexuality, and I think that has permeated throughout the society. This is easy to see in the News, movies, media, etc. The News covers a very large portion of violence throughout communities and the world, but attention to sex is minimal.
There could be many explanations for the continuation of this. Violence can be easier understood as "bad" therefore the display of it, though graphic, is understood as such.
Sex on the other hand is different, because the act of sex between two consenting individuals does not in itself have a negative connotation, therefore one must be more activity applied to it. Whereas violence can be more easily understood as a negative act against a person or people. However, since certain values and morals - whether religious or not - promote ideas of sex outside of marriage is bad, or rather that sex is an adult thing, people must be more active in assigning it as something negative, because its not so easy to identify it as bad.
does that make sense? Thats just a thought. But I certainly think that as a society we have done terribly at addressing these issues logically and honestly with our children, and its not making anything better.

You know what, if I had kids, I'd rather they see a couple making love, than watch people get shot or blown up. But that's just me....
