Not only the Muslim, but most of the ancient spiritual traditions recognize the importance of fasting, including the original Christians.
It has profound physical health benefits, and is extremely important to the physical purification process required to elevate one's state of consciousness. If you were to try it again, but preparing yourself with some research on the physical benefits to use as motivation, you might have a better experience.
There is nothing that benefits the body more than periodic fasting, and nothing feels better than the incredible clarity of mind and emotional serenity that results after 4 or 5 days of a juice-then-water-only fast. The first couple of days are not so enjoyable, though.
