This is likely to be individualistic, but I see most people as not actually fearing God, but rather, doing something that disappoints God. I equate it to someone you have a great deal of respect for. The last thing that you want to do is to have that person feel disappointed in you.

Yes, our friend fear...
Freedom from fear, and freedom from want - these were emblazoned in our times by the UN dignitaries; secretaries general who went so far as to bring into part of a political agenda the intensely personal domain. But also then, "There were countless generations who knew the story of Abraham by heart, word for word, but how many did it render sleepless?" (Johannes de Silentio, a.k.a. S. Kierkegard, "Fear and Trembling", Hong & Hong translation.) I hope I'm not too bold in saying, it is both god and myself that I fear, even of the necessity for a capital G... But fearing God, it is hard for some to even comprehend. Why should I fear, my partner says. I can think of several very good reasons. |
