I see the whole idea of Jesus' sacrifice for sin as a kind of marketing tool used by the writers of the New Testament. The people didn't want to give up their animal sacrifices and if the Bible scholars I've read are correct, some of Jesus' early followers continued the practice until the temple was destroyed in the 2nd half of the 1st century. Rather than say that God doesn't want sacrifice, the teachers of Jesus' message claimed that the ultimate sacrifice had been made. It's hard for us to imagine that Love demands nothing from us.
As long as we hold onto the idea that God wants us to sacrifice and suffer for His sake, or that Jesus was killed in our place, we'll hold onto the guilt and sin in ourselves/others. If we can let go of the idea that this is who we are (forgive = letting go) and realize our real nature (one with God, as Jesus demonstrated), there is no reason for sacrifice, or karma.

Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God."
