I really don't know...but there was a discovery made a few years ago of a crucified man in a grave in a family tomb near or around Jerusalem... The ankles as I recall were pierced and the body was a kind of in a hunched position...Some think there could have been a little platform provided.. I don't really know.. but the purpose was to humilate as well as punish malefactors. Some lingered awhile and others may have had heart attacks from the shock and trauma or been suffocated and died fairly quickly..

Nails through the palms (i.e. between the metacarpal bones) would almost certainly not be sufficient to sustain the weight of a man. The flesh and sinew that holds the metacarpals together are strongish, but the weight would be spread over far too small an area to succeed. Therefore, it is much more likely that either the nails were driven through the wrist (about the carpal bones), or that the victim was nailed through the palms and then, additionally, tied to the cross. Since there's no mention of tying, we must assume the wrist method.
