On Mahatma Gandhi.....

Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked upon this earth in flesh and blood.
----Albert Einstein

Later in his life when Gandhi was asked whether he was a Hindu, he replied:

"Yes I am. I am also a Christian, a Muslim, a Buddhist and a Jew."

Very sound wisdom, if you ask me.

Cross Yeah, Gandhi was a really great guy;

I have always admired the man since I first heard about him. He was so brave and I only wish I could be as brave.

Here are some quotes of Gandhi which I like.....

An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it. Truth stands, even if there be no public support. It is self sustained.

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not any man’s greed.

Find purpose, the means will follow.

I do not believe in the doctrine of the greatest good of the greatest number. The only real, dignified, human doctrine is the greatest good of all.

I do not want my house to be walled in on sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.

You may never know what results come of your action, but if you do nothing there will be no result.

It is unwise to be too sure of one's own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.

Let us all be brave enough to die the death of a martyr, but let no one lust for martyrdom.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.

You should be the change that you want to see in the world.

To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man's injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, then, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man's superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she not more self-sacrificing, has she not greater powers of endurance, has she not greater courage? Without her, man could not be. If nonviolence is the law of our being, the future is with woman. Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart than woman? - Young India, 10/4/1930

For this cause I too am prepared to die, but for no cause, my friend, will I be prepared to kill.

There are many causes I would die for. There is not a single cause I would kill for.

I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.

Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary.

Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.

There is no way to peace; peace is the way.

The seven blunders that human society commits and cause all the violence: wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, science without humanity, worship without sacrifice, and politics without principles.

A 'No' uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a 'Yes' merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble.

Honest differences are often a healthy sign of progress.

Truth alone will endure; all the rest will be swept away before the tide of time.

Use truth as your anvil, nonviolence as your hammer and anything that does not stand the test when it is brought to the anvil of truth and hammered with nonviolence, reject it.

When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall - think of it, always.

Even If I am a minority of one, truth is still the truth.

Truth resides in every human heart, and one has to search for it there, and to be guided by truth as one sees it. But no one has a right to coerce others to act according to his own view of the truth.

Truth never damages a cause that is just.

A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.

Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.

It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.

One needs to be slow to form convictions, but once formed they must be defended against the heaviest odds

Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.

“Nonviolence is a weapon of the strong”

“God has no religion”

“You can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison my mind.”

“Men often become what they believe themselves to be. If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it even if I didn't have it in the beginning.”

“The most heinous and the most cruel crimes of which history has record have been committed under the cover of religion or equally noble motives”

“If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”

“Intolerance betrays want of faith in one's cause”

“Faith... Must be enforced by reason...When faith becomes blind it dies.”

“They cannot take away our self-respect if we do not give it to them.”

“I believe in the fundamental Truth of all the great religions of the world. I believe that they are all God given. I came to the conclusion long ago... that all religions were true and also that all had some error in them.”

Ghandi is what I'd call a modern day prophet. His way of doing things probably wouldn't work in the US in today's world, but it was still enlightening. He was indeed wise. Many of the things he taught could come right out of Native American teachings, and that is extremely high praise. In fact, I've said much the same that you quoted him as saying,.

This is quite a few (understatement). I did not realize that all these were from Gandhi.

Why wouldn't they work in the US? I'm not arguing, just want your opinion.

Interestingly, Dr. Martin Luther King was extremely taken with Gandhi and his philosophy of non-violence, and used much of it to great effect. Like Gandhi, he was assassinated, but the efforts of both men achieved so very, very much.

Thank you I had forgotten that King had followed in Gandhi's footsteps. I think it could work again, if and when needed.
