How Do You Know The Difference?

Quote:
Three hundred years ago, if someone, knowing just what they knew at the time, proposed the existence of quarks, they would be called irrational in their belief, even if they happened to be correct. Just the same with gods, there is no rational basis for believing in something that has no evidence going for it, because there is no way to know if what you believe in belongs to the set of things that exist, or the set of things that do not exist (which is infinitely larger than the set of things that exist.)

I saw this statement today. Should we be more careful in labeling beliefs or new discoveries as irrational? How can we know the difference between something that might truly irrational and something that may be something we just don't understand yet?

The reasonable (considerate) thing to do would be to examine and test the differences to see which makes more sense. There may be many people who will not be ready to conform to a change in beliefs because the are comfortable and hopeful of their previous beliefs.

Yes, Cardero good post. Great question and thought L.K.

I am not surprised about any belief or manifestation. I believe that people that believe in Fairies and Angels can actually create them and see them, as well as the devil or even Jesus. If you believe in nothing you will see nothing. I do believe the mind is capable of creating a picture of anything imagined. Is it real or my/our imagination? What is the difference? If I see it, I created it. Vision, illness, spirits, money, struggel or bliss. The bottom line is always what serves YOU to believe?

Come up with the best life EVER and you will find.....the Truth.

Evidence and the logical consistency any purported belief makes.

Half the fun of life is learning, so it seems to me that keeping an open mind is the best guarantee we'll continue to grow - both individually and as a species. Einstein put a high value on imagination, too, which is anything but "rational." I try not to close my mind to any possibility - especially if it expands my thinking. Also, let's not forget the fact that there are other kinds of knowledge. We can also "know" things the way we feel. It might not be rational according to others, but that doesn't mean it's not meaningful.

I believe in God because He has made Himself known to me. There are people out there, who don't believe in God because He is not logical for them, yet I can't stop believeing in God just because some other people can explain everything away. I do keep my mind open to those people who need logical ansers for everything, though, because I think they have very interesting ideas that I too would like to apply somewhat to myself--without actually, knowing how, because its kinda scary to step outside of my comfort zone--but I still relly on my feelings that God has chosen to show Himself to me through, as well.
