I was wondering if there are any Teddy bears named Jesus, Buddha, or Vishnu and what people would think of it if there were?

Is there anything wrong with that?

If, as some say, what matters is the "personal relationship" between He and I, then does it mater if he is a teddy? Why is that any less (or any more) convincing or pious than any other imagining??

I am willing to bet that, in Latin countries, where "Jesus" is a common name, there are a few teddies named Jesus. I find it less than credible that, since Mohamud is one of the most common names in the world, that anyone could be charged for "allowing" chidlren to name a teddy bear Mohamud... Children name things what they name them based on their own internal, inscrutible laws.

I am also willing to bet this charge has more to do with politics regarding Darfur than Blasphemy against the Prophet (PBUH).

Send a message via Yahoo to arthra

"Twenty out of the 23 children chose Muhammad as their favourite name.

Mr Boulos said each child was then allowed to take the bear home at weekends and told to write a diary about what they did with it.

He said the children's entries were collected in a book with a picture of the bear on the cover and a message which read, "My name is Muhammad."

Actually that's not a bad technique but in Sudan it was probably not a wise thing to do..

Your thoughts?

I'm certainly not attempting to justify the reaction against the teacher, but she should have known that any depiction of the prophet, including even a drawing, is considered blasphemy in Islam. However, the chances are she'll eventually be released.

Vern

i'll try again

I think that metis is right.... especially if any armament contracts are about to be signed.

Maybe - as the children chose the name - it's them who ought to be flogged....?

There's another report here - which possibly raises some ulterior motives:
Quote:
Khartoum's Bishop Ezekiel Kondo, who is also chairman of the school council, said: "This is such a sensitive issue. I feel so sad that something so small could be built up into something so big. I feel the school is being targeted."

The school, he said, was currently caught up in a dispute with local authorities over council tax. Other teachers suggested that some people wanted to get their hands on the school grounds.

The Sudanese government has been determined to make the most of other political scandals that have come its way, keen to deflect the flood of criticism from the western world over Darfur and other troubled territories.

I thought about this, too, LK. I imagine there would be some objections.....
Obviously, though, this story is about old religious laws run amok. We should be glad it is coming to light more and more, and that people are so outraged. That's a very positive sign.

When people have grown up enough to remember that love, peace and forgiveness are the reasons they follow the teachings of Jesus, Buddha or Mohammed, maybe we'll rethink all these silly little rules. Even better - maybe we'll realize that perfect Love is not petty, as human beings can be. We should send our prayers and thoughts of forgiveness to the those who can't see such reasoning. They're the ones that really need help.

Someone told me you secretly keep a Power Ranger in your toy box called Moses. I'm off to notify the proper authorities - let them decide...
