I was listening to Karen Armstrong the other day, and she mentioned that the concept of the "rapture" really wasn't considered seriously be any Christian group until an Englishman proposed it in the 1800's. The vast majority of English didn't and don't believe in it, but there are quite a few Americans who do, especially amongst many fundamentalist Protestants.
