I have thought of the Ark as being a large "Womb" for all life.

I'm not sure the author(s) meant it to symbolize anything but, instead, was a borrowed story adjusted so as to teach certain Jewish morals and values.

I think it represents the perod of time between death and rebirth, so a womb would be an apporpriate symbol. In Eastern thought, it might be called the "Bardo" period. It can be viewed as fertilized ground, or any type of incubator.
