For the most part....
..."cult" is a term of abuse; people throw it about rather carelessly, and apply it to any religion they do not like. have heard the Roman Catholic Church described as a "cult" by some....

I was raised in the Catholic Church and I used to have a horrible fear of Hell. All the guilt I felt could of been one of the reasons I'm a schizophrenic today. It felt like spiritual abuse to me.
