It's a Biblical issue because the bronze-age goatherds who wrote the Bible made it one.

It's a moral issue today because people who are already anti-gay seize on that last remaining straw to justify their bigotry.

I am heterosexual and married to the same woman I met while in college. Homosexuals are people whose sexual preference is not like mine. That does not make it bad or a sin. I have a hypothesis. Secure heterosexuals have either indifference to or sympathy for the plight of homosexuals by society. It is those who are living as heterosexuals but constantly fighting internal homosexual urges. Those urges are natural for those Homophobes as they are for Homosexuals.

The Homophobe is trouble because he (usually male latent homosexuals who are suppressed) are; constantly fighting urges that they consider sinful or in some way "unmanly". Many use backward Stone Age Religions like Judaism, Islam, and Christianity (though it is 95% Pagan) as excuses for fighting homosexuality.

Why do they fight against Homosexuals (and homosexual rights to be themselves)?

The Homosexual who has "come out" and is living an obvious Homosexual life-style is threatening to the homophobe (suppressed latent homosexual). It makes it even harder for the homophobe to continue suppressing his desires for same sex sexuality. It is like showing a piece of cake with thick icing in front of the face of a diabetic or a bottle of Rum to a recovering alcoholic.

Thus the Homophobe hates that "qu***" who is causing him to be stressed. He may use religion to fight not only his "sinful" urges, but also to make life miserable for that gay couple who so TEMPT him. That is why he opposes gay marriage. The very idea of Gay Marriage is tilting that delicate balancing act in his sexual network. If stressed too much or the individual is weak in character, he may commit violence against the known homosexual (Matthew Shepherd).

I think something similar results in the often ugly face of anti-Atheists in America. The living, clearly thinking Atheist, triggers awareness of the Christian's suppressed doubts about the many shaky tenets of his religion. More than the arguments of an Atheist or Non-Theist, the fact that we exist at all is seen as threatening. It makes their doubts bubble up to the cerebrum. They have to suppress the doubts or lose their delusion of immortality. The struggle leads to increasing hatred of the Atheist or Non-Theist.

I think that the prevalence rate of Biblical Christianity (Evangelicals, Pentecostals, Catholics, and Fundamentalists) is so high that it explains why 75% of Americans have an unfavourable (i.e. hatred) view of us. We exist and that is threatening to those with increasing doubts.

Perhaps all forms of bigotry result from some internal conflicts.
